Etymology of Campoon's Island name

AELARA’S TRUE ACCOUNT (THE GODDESS VERSION)
Aelara tells Lex the story the way only she can — half lullaby, half history, half warning.

She begins:

“Names are accidents that become destinies."

Then she explains:

Long before the fog judged hearts, long before sparks chose carriers, long before Perry or Lex or Terra ever touched the island, the original inhabitants lived without writing.
Their history was breath.
Their memory was song.
Their truth was spoken, never carved.

When humans first camped across the water, the island’s creatures listened.
They always listened.

They heard:

- murmurs
- chants
- prayers
- warnings
- fear
- fascination

The humans didn’t know the island was alive.
They didn’t know the fog was listening.
They didn’t know the creatures understood rhythm long before they understood language.

The humans chanted:

“HA‑OOOONNA, HA OOM!

Aelara tells Lex:

“Humans speak to gods even when they don’t believe in them.”

The creatures heard the chant.
They mimicked it.
They shaped it.
They made it their own.

And from that chant came two possible origins — both true, both remembered, both argued about.

---

VERSION ONE — THE CAMP‑ENDERS
Aelara says:

“One group grew tired of the noise.”

These were the bold ones — the cliff‑leapers, the night‑runners, the fog‑dancers.

They crossed the water to silence the humans.

Not to harm them.
Just to scare them.
To end the camp.

The humans fled.

The creatures returned triumphant.

The fog whispered:

“Camp‑enders.”

Over time, the word softened.
Shifted.
Bent.
Became:

Campoons.

---

VERSION TWO — THE CAMP GOONS
Aelara laughs when she tells this one.

Another group — smaller, gentler, curious — crossed the water to scavenge.

They wanted:

- food
- tools
- shiny things
- stories

The humans saw them.

And shouted:

GOONS

The creatures didn’t know the word.
But they liked the sound.

They brought it home.

The fog repeated it.

It became:

Camp goons.

Which became:

Campoons.

AELARA’S FINAL WORD ON IT
She tells Lex:

“Names are born from misunderstanding.
But they grow into truth.”

The island didn’t choose the name.
The fog didn’t choose the name.
The creatures didn’t choose the name.

The humans did.

And the island accepted it.

Because the island accepts everything that enters its memory.
